How to Prepare Your PNG for Perfect DST Results

The quality of your DST output depends heavily on the quality of your PNG input. A blurry, low-resolution logo will produce a messy, hard-to-read embroidery — no matter how good the converter is. Follow these preparation steps for clean, professional results every time.

1. Use High Resolution (300 DPI Minimum)

Low-resolution images have jagged, pixelated edges that confuse the digitizing engine into creating ragged stitch paths. For best results, your PNG should be at least 300 DPI at the intended embroidery size. If your source is a small web image, ask your client for the original vector file (AI, EPS, or SVG) and export a high-resolution PNG from that.

2. Remove the Background

Embroidery machines stitch every color area they detect. A white background with a subtle gradient or shadow will produce unwanted stitching behind your design. Use a transparent background (PNG supports this natively) so the converter only processes the actual artwork.

Free tools for background removal: remove.bg, Photoshop’s “Remove Background” button, or GIMP’s Fuzzy Select tool.

3. Use Flat, Solid Colors

Embroidery thread comes in solid colors — there is no “blending” like ink on paper. Gradient fills, watercolor effects, and photographic shading will not translate well. Simplify your artwork to flat, solid color regions before converting. Aim for 6 colors or fewer for the cleanest output.

4. Remove Fine Details

Any detail smaller than approximately 3mm at your target embroidery size will likely be lost or look messy when stitched. Thin lines under 1mm wide will not hold up in thread at all. Simplify text, remove tiny decorative elements, and thicken hairlines before converting.

5. Increase Contrast

High contrast between your design elements and the background helps the digitizing algorithm detect boundaries accurately. If your logo uses light gray on white, increase the contrast to dark gray on white before uploading.

6. Convert to PNG from Vector When Possible

If your original design is a vector file (SVG, AI, EPS), export it as a high-resolution PNG at 600 DPI rather than using a screen-captured or compressed version. This preserves crisp, anti-aliased edges that the converter can process cleanly.
